Chapter Five
“This is our baby?” Preston asked again, examining the print out like it was a treasure map.
“Yes,” I nodded and smiled.
“Really our little guy?” Nate asked and reached for the print out. They’d both been passing it back and forth for the last few minutes, immediately forgiving me for not telling them about Dr. Suarez the moment I’d handed it to them.
“Yes!” I giggled, “really really our baby.”
“Let’s celebrate,” Nate said, “we’re leaving early and going out for dinner.”
“I don’t know if I feel like it,” I said, “I’m so tired today.”
“We’ll cook for you then,” Preston said, “anything you want. What does the ‘bean’ want for dinner?” He said the last part near my belly. I had to laugh at his enthusiasm. I loved how excited they were about all this.
“How about steaks?” Preston asked.
“Sounds good,” I replied, “I have a weird craving for meat lately.”
“That’s our little bruiser needing protein so he’ll come right out ready to swing a baseball bat,” Nate laughed.
“You mean our little princess,” I said with a grin.
I needed to pee again; worried that I’d read it gets worse throughout the pregnancy. If it was this bad now, I’d have to find diapers for myself later on. I smiled at the image of myself in a diaper.
I opened the bathroom door and stepped inside. One of the stalls was occupied so I made my way to the one beside it. I sat down and relaxed when something dropped on the floor next to my foot. It looked like a beige strap of some sort.
“Could you hand that to me?” a voice said and I picked it up and held it towards the other stall.
“Thanks,” she said and that’s when it hit me. It was Kitty’s voice.
I said, “No prob,” in a low voice, trying to disguise mine.
I finished up and waited, she left the stall and stood in front of the mirror. For once I was grateful for the crack in between the stall divider and the door. I watched Kitty study herself in the mirror. She was wearing a loose summer dress with black tights underneath.
She lifted her dress and adjusted her stomach. I wondered if I’d have to shove my own stomach around once I grew a little larger when something occurred to me.
It didn’t look natural. She’d recently been looking slightly larger but nothing that noticeable yet.
But now, overnight, her stomach was noticeable. It was larger, awkward, and obviously made out of some kind of foam.
Her belly was fake.
I gasped at the realization and she turned to the stall. She narrowed her eyes and said, “Everything okay in there?”
“I’m fine,” I replied in that low voice, praying she wouldn’t catch on.
“That’s good,” she replied and pulled her dress down over the fake belly. She cupped her hands around it, turned to the left and right, seemed satisfied with what she saw and walked out.
I exhaled and stood up. I hurried out, washed my hands and wondered what I would do with this new information.
